The Chantry - Department of Trivia

Department of Trivia: Geographical Location — Olympia, WA

The chantry resides a bit north of Olympia in a wooded area. The extensive property is owned by the chantry and surrounded by a dense tree population, thicket and brush. To the people of Olympia, the area appears to house a therapeutic youth group home, for troubled teens. This works as a perfect repellant for the good citizens of Olympia, who most of the time will strictly forbid their kids to fraternize with those definitely bad influences.

The property includes even a stretch of beach at the Ellis cove segment of Budd Inlet. There you’ll see occasional joggers and dog walkers, but even those usually hold their distance to the main property.

City and wider Area

Olympia

Olympia, WA, is a city of about 50.000 residents. It is located in Thurston County, at the shore of Budd inlet. Budd inlet is the Southernmost arm of Puget sound, a saltwater bay that is bordered by, among others, the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia.

The city houses a public state-related college and a community college. In the directly connected neighboring town of Lacey a private, Catholic university can be found.

The economy is dominated by light industry, especially timber, firearms and ultra-light aircrafts. In addition city and region creates significant revenue through tourism, mineral water, breweries and interestingly: a vibrant independent music industry.

A number of smaller cites connect, merge and interlock at the shores of the Puget sound. Together they form to the Greater Seattle area.

Indigenous lands

In the wider area a number of Indigenous controlled areas can be found. Among them the  Nisqually Nation, the Skokomish Tribe, the Squaxin Island Tribe, the Chehalis Reservation, the Puyallup Reservation, the Snoqualmie Reservation, the Muckleshoot Reservation, the Port Madison Reservation of the Suquamish Tribe and some smaller areas.

National parks

Olympia is surrounded by several national parks.

The Chantry - Department of Trivia

Department of Trivia: Description

The outside impression of the chantry’s property deceives. The main building is a 500 years old mansion from England, that was disassembled, shipped to the US and rebuild from original materials. The windows, especially the stained-glass windows, former church windows, are, too, imported from England.

Like many incredible expensive buildings from the beginning of the 20th century, its upkeep was, after the financial woes of the 1920s and the war, no longer feasible. It was abandoned by its former owner, fell in disrepair and was finally forgotten.

When the Deacon Evi Nemeth bought the land, the real estate market had just crashed, making the cost manageable. She poured her life savings (at the time) and funds from friends and some future chantry members into it.

She planned, from the beginning, to build it as a college chantry to give future Virtual Adepts and possibly apprentices from other traditions a safe place to learn and grow.

Department of Trivia: The Haunting

The premises are haunted by Mac & Cheese. How these magically imbued dishes came to life is unclear. An unauthorized experiment with some herbs from Briony’s sunken garden might have something to do with it. But it is generally not talked about.

Sometimes several days go by, without any sign of either Mac or Cheese. But at least, when there is pasta on the menu — even when one of the chantry’s residents tries to quell their hunger with a quick cup of Asia noodles — Mac appears, splattering oily sauce everywhere and Cheese inadvertently follows.

After they tried to eat the Deacon’s familiar — that appears in the form of a typical Corgi — and were nearly eaten themselves in the process, an uneasy truce between the chantry’s familiars, pets and those two entities exists.

The — by the chantry’s underage population — beloved dish Mac & Cheese has fallen out of fashion. In fact, any pasta-based dish has. Even cheese has been replaced with vegan alternatives, by now. A circumstance, that pleases Briony, who always tries her best to have the apprentices eat a healthy diet.

Even the attempt to have a pasta feast at a Olympian Italian tavern proved futile. Before the gaggle of apprentices was able to get their orders in, Mac made a splash at the tavern’s window front.

Plans to try again in at least 50 miles distance are ongoing.
